Watch a Dwarf Fortress Goblin Raid turn disastrous

Longtime Dwarf Fortress fans will be familiar with goblin raids. Once you establish a thriving base, the riches you produce there become irresistible to the violent little bullies, and they come in massive hordes to take it. Dwarf Fortress co-developer Zach Adams showed off an easy way to deal with them in the new version of the settlement management game coming out on Steam (at some point).

Adams Fort is carved into the cliffs that border a cascading gorge, and it has two upper entrances, both covered by lever hatches. Under normal circumstances, the open hatch leads to a long staircase that leads to the surface of the water below the waterfall, where there are shops, workshops, and immediately accessible meeting spaces.

However, when a raid approaches, Adams orders his dwarves to close that hatch and open the one that covers the other entrance. The goblins head straight for it, not realizing that this isn’t just a normal entrance to the fortress – instead, this one leads into a long hallway that folds in on itself and is absolutely filled with deadly traps.

Here is the video:

The huge crowd of goblins, which far outnumber the local dwarf militia, rush down the hall, only to be slammed into cages, crushed by falling rocks and gored by floor-mounted corkscrew traps . Their numerical advantage diminishes considerably.

The results make it look like the dwarves rolled out the proverbial red carpet, but it really is the goblins who are responsible for the change in colors. Yes, Dwarf Fortress is definitely going to have some gore now that the graphics have been introduced.

The Goblins eventually give up, but only after a frankly disturbing death toll. Adams ends up opening the doors to let his militia mop up the stragglers and get ahead of two misbehaving dwarf children who have decided to misbehave and defy his orders not to pick up corpses in raids.

Goblins captured in cave traps, Adams says, can be transported safely to the surface and into the compound where he keeps a giant dingo he bought from a group of roaming elves. We’ve also heard that they can be thrown into a volcano, if you have one on hand.

We still don’t know when Dwarf Fortress releases on Steam, we just get more and more excited every time we see one of these clips.
