V Rising is a survival game where you are a vampire

Vampires are always thirsty, and they have an antagonistic relationship with trees – well, wooden stakes – which makes them perfect protagonists for a survival game. Hell, one of the first things the vampire survival game V Rising gameplay trailer shows is an angry dracula coming to town on a tree with an ax, it’s like the first few minutes of a new game of Don’t Starve only even more goth.

From there it gets a little more interesting, showing that you will be able to create your own castle, ride horses, and build a riding bud team, all while avoiding daylight. (While some of the action takes place during the day as well, you can apparently craft equipment to mitigate the effects of the Hated Daystar.)

The fight, which definitely seems to have the same arena brawler DNA, is interesting to those familiar with Stunlock Studios’ previous game, Battlerite. Lots of dashing, whirlpools, skill shots and jumps for slamdowns, combined with traditional vampire moves like going invisible or being a bat for a while.

According to the press release, “To survive as a vampire, you must chase blood in nearby settlements, hide from the scorching sun, and avoid walking in the garlic fields.” Something about the image of a vampire accidentally walking into a field of garlic and crying in agony makes me crack, but keep going. “Build your castle and invite bloodthirsty friends to join you as you explore a gothic open world, plunder villages, plunder bandits, and roam the lands of supernatural beasts.”

There is a multiplayer component, with co-op and PvP. According to a blog post, the objective is to have “room for at least 50 castles per server”. If you want to play solo or with selected friends on a private server, that will apparently be an option, for that feeling of Valheim with friends. Fun fact: Stunlock is based in the Swedish town of Skövde, as are the developers of Valheim Iron Gate.

V Rising released on To smoke, and will have a beta later this year, you can Sign up for now.
