A look at the NCAA Tournament by the numbers:
0.52 – Average years of experience for Arizona players, making them the youngest team on the field and third-youngest in Division I, according to analytics site KenPom.com. The Wildcats’ online roster includes one sixth-year player, two juniors, eight sophomores and five freshmen. For the purposes of KenPom’s calculation, a freshman has zero years of experience, a sophomore has one year of experience, and so on.
2.81 – The average number of years of experience for Texas Southern players, making them the oldest team on the field. The Tigers’ online roster lists six seniors, four graduate students, three juniors, one sophomore and three freshmen.
5-7 – Height of Arkansas guard Chris Lykes, the shortest player in the tournament.
7-4 – Height from Purdue center Zach Edey, the tallest player in the tournament.
9 — Coaches participating in the tournament as freshmen at their schools: Mark Adams, Texas Tech; Chris Beard, Texas; Hubert Davis, North Carolina; Tommy Lloyd, Ariz.; Steve Lutz, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi; Kevin Nickelberry, LSU; TJ Otzelberger, State of Iowa; Shaka Smart, Marquette and Drew Valentine, Loyola-Chicago. Indiana’s Mike Woodson finished in the top four.
9 – Big Ten schools in tournament, most of all conferences and tied for most in Big Ten history. The Big East holds the NCAA record with 11 nominations in 2011.
22.5 – The average winning margin for No. 1 seed Gonzaga, the highest of any team entering the tournament since the Zags’ 22.8 in 2019.
25.1 – Bryant’s Peter Kiss national best average.
27 – Oscar Tshiebwe’s double-double in 33 games for Kentucky. He is averaging 17 points and 15.1 rebounds per game.
30 – Age of Loyola-Chicago’s Valentine, the youngest coach in the tournament and in Division I.
30 – The average number of 3-point attempts per game in Alabama.
45 – Nationally leading 3-point shooting percentage in South Dakota State.
46 – Jacksonville State’s Demaree King 3-point shooting percentage.
57.7 – Points allowed by San Diego State, the lowest per game on the field and second lowest in Division I.
75 – Age of Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, the tournament’s oldest coach.
80 — Miles Wisconsin will travel from Madison to Milwaukee for its Midwest Region game against Colgate on Friday, the shortest distance a team has traveled for the first round.
87.8 – Nation’s leading points per game by Gonzaga.
2,425 – Air miles Seton Hall will travel to San Diego for its Southern Region game against TCU on Friday. That would be the farthest distance a team has traveled for the first round unless Bryant wins their playoff on Wednesday. In that case, Bryant would fly 2,567 air miles to San Diego to play Arizona on Friday.
338,210.96 — The dollar value of a unit that the NCAA pays to conferences from the Men’s Basketball Performance Distribution Fund. Conferences receive one unit for each round played by one of its teams. They accumulate in value and are paid over six years, so the actual value of the unit will end up being around $2.03 million. Even if all nine Big Ten teams lose their openers, the conference will earn an estimated $18.2 million for this year’s tournament.
