Indian Center for Dispute Resolution (IDRC) in collaboration with LatestLaws.com organized the 1st National ADR Tournament, 2022 recently. The event saw the participation of several luminaries in the field of law. Hon. Justice JR Midha, former Judge of Delhi High Court and Hon. Justice BB Parsoon, former Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court graced the farewell ceremony.
SASTRA Deemed University Law School was named winner of the 1st National ADR Tournament, 2022.
The final round of the tournament was adjudicated by the Arbitral Tribunal consisting of the Honorable Justice BB Parsoon, Mr. Ratan K Singh, Senior Counsel and Mr. Tejas Karia, Partner and Head of Arbitration, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM ).
Here are the judges for the semi-finals:

- Mr. Virender Kumar Gupta, Former Member, NCLT;

Mr. Divyansh H Rathi, Managing Partner, Lexidem & Rathi, was the moderator of the awards and farewell ceremony. Ms. Sumedha S. Rathi, Member of the Advisory Board of the Indian Center for Dispute Resolution (IDRC) delivered the welcome address. Ms. Riya Rathi, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of LatestLaws.com delivered the vote of thanks.
Judge JR Midha, in his opening speech, not only congratulated the organizers for organizing a wonderful competition for the students, but also praised the choice of a simple and innovative theoretical problem. As the theoretical problem revolved around damages, he shared his views on the calculation of damages. He reflected on some cases he had handled as a judge. He also discussed the practical applicability of arbitration. He pointed out that although the sentence must pass the test of the most basic notions of morality and justice, even if the scope of it is narrow.
Judge Midha commended the participating teams for their outstanding efforts and encouraged conducting and participating in mock trials with such wholesome fictional issues to help students gain a deeper understanding of the practical nuances of law.
Judge BB Parsoon, in his farewell speech, encouraged the non-winners and congratulated each team for their participation. He advanced the conversation on morality and reiterated that Indian law is tied to morality, despite the lack of explicit recognition. Additionally, he discussed the role of the judiciary as an institution of courage in the unprecedented times of COVID-19.
Justice Parsoon encouraged students to serve the Indian masses based on their needs and demands, not based on Western concepts. Furthermore, he expressed his optimism that India will become an arbitration hub in the future.
Afterwards, the Honorable Judge BB Parsoon announced the winners. SASTRA Deemed University students were declared the winners of the 1st National IDRC ADR Tournament, 2022. The team consisted of Fahima H, Yugantara and Sashi Barathvaj of 5th year B.Com LLB (Hons). They received a cash prize of Rs. 50,000.
