What there is to know
The Houston Cougars face the Rice Owls at 6:30 p.m. ET Saturday at Rice Stadium. The Cougars are hoping to build on the 45-27 victory they won over Rice when they already played in September 2018.
Houston may have drawn its first blood against the Texas Tech Red Raiders last week, but it was Texas Tech that had the final say. Houston took a 38-21 contusion from Texas Tech. Houston was 14-0 ahead at the end of the first quarter, but couldn’t hold onto the lead. No one had a matchless offensive game for Houston, but they got scores from WR Nathaniel Dell and TE Seth Green.
Meanwhile, Rice and the Arkansas Razorbacks last week was up for grabs at halftime, but Rice was widely passed 31-7 in the second half. Rice must be in pain after a 38-17 loss to the Razorbacks. The Owls were no doubt aware of their 19.5 point disadvantage in the points spread, but foreknowledge did nothing to prevent the result. WR August Pitre III made a good effort for the losing team, catching four passes for a touchdown and 97 yards.
With both teams having had bitter ratings in their previous matches, they will undoubtedly be looking to produce a better result in this one. Giving up four turnovers, the Cougars struggled to keep the ball. We’ll see if Rice can exploit this vulnerability.
