Peril 2022! Second Chance Tournament

Monday sees the debut of the very first Jeopardy! Second Chance Tournament! 18 players have been invited back for a second chance to be a Jeopardy! champion – players were split into two weeks of 9 players, with the winner of each week getting the final two spots in the Tournament of Champions.

Here is the preview of week 1:

Monday, October 17, 2022:

Cindy Zhang on Jeopardy!
Cindy Zhang

0/0 on rebound attempts (out of 4 rebound opportunities)
39.29% first on the buzzer (22/56)

Medium Coryat: $13,600
Aaron Gulyas in Jeopardy!
Aaron Gulyas

24 correct, 5 incorrect
0/2 on rebound attempts (out of 3 rebound opportunities)
42.11% first on the buzzer (24/57)
1/2 on daily doubles (net won: $1,000)
0/1 in peril final
Medium Coryat: $15,000
Jessica Stephens on Jeopardy!
jessica stephens
Nashville, TN
15 correct, 0 incorrect
1/1 on rebound attempts (out of 5 rebound opportunities)
22.81% first on the buzzer (13/57)
0/0 on daily doubles
1/1 in Final Jeopardy
Medium Coryat: $14,400
Preview thoughts from Andy: One thing you’re going to see a lot in my previews is that I think it’s going to be a generally tight tournament. Cindy was barely behind before entering Final Jeopardy on Sri Kompalla, Aaron Gulyas came into a Final Jeopardy! of defeating Ryan Long, and Jessica was the third player in the famous Matt Amodio-Jonathan Fisher matchup that inspired this tournament in the first place. It will also be very difficult to judge how well someone like Jessica will perform. I suspect she will surpass her past performances, given that her opposition in her first match totaled 49 wins.

Medium Coryat: $11,600
Tracy Pitzel on Jeopardy!
Tracy Pitzel

1/1 on rebound attempts (out of 4 rebound opportunities)
35.09% first on buzzer (20/57)
0/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: -$1,000)
0/1 in peril final
Medium Coryat: $18,000
Molly Karol in Jeopardy!
Molly Karol
Austin, TX
21 correct, 5 incorrect
3/4 on rebound attempts (out of 6 rebound opportunities)
35.09% first on buzzer (20/57)
1/1 on daily doubles (net won: $7,000)
1/1 in Final Jeopardy
Medium Coryat: $9,800
Preview thoughts from Andy: This semi-final has three very different paths to this tournament – Tracy gave Matt Amodio a solid run, including 20 correct and an $18,000 Coryat; Erica barely lost in a tiebreaker and was elevated into the tournament from alternate status after Isaac Applebaum was unable to play, and Molly rode a daily double of $7,000 to put Andrew He in a tie situation. In my opinion, I think Tracy is probably the strongest of the three players in this game, but it could really go either way.

24.56% first on the buzzer (14/57)
2/2 on daily doubles (net won: $7,000)
0/1 in peril final
Medium Coryat: $15,000
Pam Schoenberg in Jeopardy!
Pam Schoenberg
South of Salem, New York
24 correct, 2 incorrect
1/1 on rebound attempts (out of 2 rebound opportunities)
38.60% first on buzzer (22/57)
1/2 on daily doubles (net earned: -$400)
0/1 in peril final
Medium Coryat: $18,000
Preview thoughts from Andy: A lot of people are predicting that Pam Schoenberg will win all of this week, but she’ll have to get past this semi-final first. Pam nearly defeated Amy Schneider in Amy’s 10th match, holding a big lead after the first round. However, Renée gave Mattea Roach a very strong run and James was very strong on the buzzer, coming in a Final Jeopardy! to be a champion himself! Again, I really think these three games will be incredibly close.
