Lam, who was still on the qualifying list, was officially told he had a place in the squad on July 5.

It was worth all those overseas trips, including one to Iran early last year, just after the United States delivered a missile strike.

“It was a huge risk that I was prepared to take,” Lam said. “Everything worked.”

Lam looks forward to the opening ceremonies.

“Walking with all of these great athletes is what I will cherish the most,” he said.

Until he won the Under-19 singles title (as a 17-year-old at Los Altos High) at the 2014 Pan Am Junior Games, Lam didn’t seriously think about qualifying for the Olympics. .

Lam devotes up to 16 hours per week to his training and has practiced at several clubs in the Bay Area. He started at the Bay Badminton Center in Milpitas, where his father was affiliated.

“I always played competitive badminton nationally until college (at Cal State Pomona),” Lam said. “This was when my tournament schedule was packed.”

In 2018, Lam reached the league game at the Guatemala International and Bahrain International. The following year he won a gold medal at the Zambia International.

Last year he won a bronze medal at the Peru Futures Series.

Seven-time National Junior Champion and three-time Pan American Junior Champion, Lam continued to build on his world rankings.

Having fun playing a sport he loved, Lam stayed put throughout a tournament schedule.

“I’m not so focused on the results as trying to play the best I can,” he said. “My priority was to have fun.

Lam also needed a mental advantage to stay focused in big games in front of big crowds.

“I have to have the ability to play the right shot at the right time in the midst of all this anxiety,” he said.
