Piranha Games, developer of MMO MechWarrior Online, apologized to players after renaming two teams in the game with “trans” in the title.
In a blog post, Piranha’s live operations manager Matt Newman explained that the company has backed out of the move and rolled back the changes. He also added that there was “no fanaticism or ill will towards the Piranha Games trans community, myself or the customer support team.”
“Our actions have obviously hurt and offended people, I apologize. We will do better,” Newman continued.
“Given that trans rights are not a political issue, we will allow the team to use either of their original choices as the team name. Additionally, we will revoke all moderation actions taken within the framework of this moderation. “
The studio initially renamed the two groups, named “KDCM V: Trans Rights” and “KDCM VI: Trans Fights,” according to a Reddit thread shared last Friday by Daalpacagirl, a member of one of the aforementioned teams. Teams are nominated to express their support for transgender players in the community.
In an email to one of the team leaders, Piranha said that although the company bans intolerance, MechWarrior Online is not an “appropriate environment” for “real political discussions”, of where the name change.
Along with the team name changes, Daalpacagirl also received a 48-hour suspension from MechWarrior Online following reports the company received regarding “in-game conduct regarding actions deemed harmful to others. gamers and overall gaming experience, ”according to PC Gamer.
The company went on to clarify that the ban involved Daalpacagirl frequently typing “trans rights” into the game’s chat feature.
Piranha co-founder Russ Bullock also explained via Twitter that the word “trans”, among other things, is being excluded from the game’s EULA in order to combat trolls.
“Fuck the bad trolls that we spent a lot of resources with are out there, everyone remembers some of the great examples from the past,” Bullock said. “It’s good to be disappointed and with PGI could have found a way around this predicament, but it is misleading to immediately call PGI anti trans etc. Unfortunately bad apples create situations that limit the choice for the larger group. “
