Pakistan defeat exposes India’s undercooked batting unit

Finally, for the 13th time, Pakistan got the better of India in an ICC World Cup clash. That it was worth the wait, only they can tell, but there is no doubt the audacity that accompanied their ten-wicket tour at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday night.

India’s invincibility against its cross-border adversaries was bound to end at some point. It is quite remarkable that for a dozen competitions spread over 29 and a half years, they have kept a clean sheet against the most changeable international cricket teams in the World Cups of the two limited variants. Few, however, would have negotiated how the most one-sided record in cricket World Cup history has been slightly turned around.

Connoisseurs will understand that the surprise of the night, if there is any, is not so much that Pakistan finally managed to overtake India, but that they did so through ten wickets. It was not a self-destructive, imploding, pressure-phobic Pakistan. If anything, their cricket was more Indian than that of India, their approach the most judicious mix of scorching fire and icy coolness that dampened the enthusiasm of their opponents from the start.
