ISHPEMING, Mich. (WJMN) – The Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament returns to Ishpeming in June.
The tip for the event is Friday, June 24, with the “Badge Battle”. Local police, firefighters, coastguards and possibly even members of the DNR will appear in court to compete.
Games involving the public will begin on Saturday June 26, after the opening ceremonies, and will continue until Sunday June 27. If you can’t film it like Steph Curry, or dunk it like Giannis Antetokounmpo, don’t worry. The tournament is for all ages and skill levels.
“You know, we have phenomenal teams,” said Jennifer Hendrickson, Ishpeming organizer Gus Macker. “They can dunk, pass in the back and we have some who have never played before. There’s a side note, if you lose your first two games you go down the ‘toilet bowl’ which is fun , some people just like to win because you get a trophy with a toilet bowl on it. It’s just fun to watch, you know, little kids, old people.
It costs $160 to register a team, you can do it HERE. The deadline to register a team by mail is June 3. Online registration closes June 6.
If you’re not looking to strap on the basketball shoes and sweat it out, that’s okay. This event has something for everyone. Food vendors will be there, including the famous Croatian chicken, they will be a dunk tank, face paint, and more.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Hendrickson said. “It’s fun to see so many people. Friday night, when all the pitches are set up at four o’clock, people are just coming out of the carpentry. All of a sudden it’s just people coming in, you know, come down shoot, find your ground if you’re playing. Just check out what’s there.
Ishpeming is one of three UP stops on the Gus Macker World Tour with tournaments being held in Sault Ste Marie the weekend of July 9 and Iron Mountain the weekend of July 16.
