The folks behind the Haunted PS1 demo disc waited until October to show us their second annual EEK3 independent horror showcase, as Americans insist October is the scariest month. I mean the dutch call november Slachtmaand, which literally means month of slaughter, but whatever. October is going well, I guess.
EEK3 is an hour and more of low-poly horror-style trailers, animated by Skully the Skeleton: a staring abomination with an inhuman smirk that doesn’t look like a typical E3 host at all. (Skully wears a hat.)
If an hour and 23 minutes of texture blur and aliasing is a bit too much for you, here are some of the highlights, pre-chewed and ready to cough right into your waiting spout. Wide-open.
Sorry we are closed, a mysterious breath of fresh and clear air in a show dominated by VHS fuzz and voxels (the trailer starts at 45.24). Michelle, the protagonist in the pink jacket whose gun has a muzzle, lives in a demonic world where some of the demons seem pretty nice. I don’t know what kind of game it is, but I want to play it. Due in 2022 from trendy games.
Hitflesh, a single player simulation of a haunted MMO server. The Virtual Archaeologist Foundation has resurrected a beloved classic MMO, but maybe this particular fantasy world should have stayed dead. Demo coming soon itch.io soon.
Celestial landscape, which involves trying to get home at night to a city full of two-headed dogs, eye monsters, bird monsters, in fact a whole variety of monsters. You have a cell phone to solve puzzles, and I guess you can call people on it too. Developped by Hanging rabbit, demo scheduled for October 22.
Necrofugitive, a smooth 2D action game where you play as a shapeshifter cultist. In one form you have claws, in the other you are a slaughter demon who can summon a small army of other demons and breathe fire. Released on To smoke in 2022.
Sauna 2000, a horror folk comedy about a Finnish holiday gone bad. A first Sauna 2000 demo was a highlight of the original Haunted PS1 demo disc, giving you the seemingly simple task of collecting items to make a sauna work, then turning into an inexplicable nightmare. It is extremely Finnish. New demo coming soon itch.io soon.
Future reality, a sci-fi racing game in the vein of Wipeout or Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, only sometimes, instead of flying through tunnels lit by bands of neon arrows, you run through the bowels of a toothy worm. Now this is pod race, in the most meaty and organic sense of the word “pod”.
> THE FASTEST AND MOST IMPOSSIBLE RACING LEAGUE IS YOURS TO CONQUER.> RACE YOUR RIVALS TO DEATH IN THIS DARK FUTURE.> COMING SOON 2022 … ððð @ HauntedPs1 #FutureReality #madewithunity pic.twitter. com / uLj4hHM5l2October 8, 2021
El Paso, Elsewhere, a bullet-time third-person shooter set in a twisted motel that has sprawled out into the underworld. It’s basically Max Payne with vampires. And werewolves. Due in 2022 on To smoke.
Hollowsk 1999 3D, a post-Soviet Silent Hill in first person. I mean, his website is soviethill.com, I’m not flippant. Of all the foggy city games in EEK3, this is the one that stood out for me. It takes place in a simulation of an endless city, where you are meant to be alone. And yet, there in the draw distance, there are footsteps. it comes to To smoke.
Dead Letters Department, another entry for typing games certainly has an odd list. You have a job in data entry, typing letters that for some reason could not be delivered. A classic dead end work that destroys souls. Letters shouldn’t sound like they’re written to you, should they? To come To smoke.
Pleading with the ancient gods, a 3D platform game featuring sword fights, dodging and sinister occult pacts. Based on Plead with the mountain god, which was designed for the Haunted PS1 Summer of Screams game jam, but significantly expanded. Due “When will the gods do it like this” on To smoke and itch.io.
Ratuz, a stealth platform-puzzle game like Another World or Flashback, only with giant rats. You are the subject of a science experiment in a runaway prison, and you are going to have to reload after many bloody deaths before you escape.
Derelikt, an FPS for fans of System Shock 2, Half-Life and that Alien Resurrection game on PlayStation. When a gigantic creature is discovered floating in orbit around Saturn, a research outpost is built over the being’s body, and this charming place is where you head to. To come itch.io.
