Brookings Registry | SDSU releases men’s basketball schedule

BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State men’s basketball team has put together a non-conference schedule that includes several first-time games and intriguing playoff stories as the Jackrabbits announced the rest of their 2022-23 roster.

SDSU is hosting its only exhibition before its regular season schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 2, when the Jackrabbits take on Concordia-St. Paul in the Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits open the 2022-23 campaign with three opponents they will face for the first time.

The season officially begins on Monday, November 7 with a game in Akron against the Zips. Akron is coming off a 24-10 season that ended with a Mid-American Conference Tournament title and a four-point loss to UCLA in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. SDSU then heads west to take on Boise State on Wednesday, November 9 at ExtraMile Arena. The Broncos, another NCAA Tournament team, went 27-8 overall a season ago and are the defending Mountain West Conference champions.

South Dakota State returns to the Pentagon in Sanford on Tuesday, Nov. 15, as the Jackrabbits take on St. Bonaventure in Sioux Falls that night. The Bonnies advanced to the National Invitational Tournament Semifinals at Madison Square Garden last year and the previous season the Atlantic 10 champions advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

“We are certainly pleased to release our schedule for our fans,” SDSU head coach Eric Henderson said. “Challenging yourself early has always been extremely important and this year is no different.

“Playing against three NCAA tournament-caliber teams up front will do just that. Also being able to return to the Sanford Pentagon, which I believe is one of the best venues in college basketball, is also a great opportunity for our team.

The Jackrabbits make their home debut on Saturday, November 19 against Stephen F. Austin. The Lumberjacks went 22-10 last year, including an 83-71 loss to the Jackrabbits in Nacogdoches.

SDSU is scheduled to travel to Savannah, Georgia to participate in the Savannah Invitational during the Thanksgiving break. The multi-team event will take place at the Enmarket Arena which was newly built and opened in February.

A three-game road trip follows and leads the Jacks to matchups at Kent State (December 2), Alabama (December 3) and Montana (December 6). The contest against the Golden Flashes will be the second in history with SDSU dropping the 2006-07 season opener in their only previous meeting. The Jackrabbits are making a return trip to Tuscaloosa to face an Alabama program that is expected to be ranked in the top 10 in preseason polls. SDSU wraps up the trip with a game at Dahlberg Arena against the Grizzlies. The Jacks are 1-5 against Montana, with their only double overtime win 68-67 at Missoula in 2012.

“This stretch will be a big challenge for our team,” Henderson said. “But I think it will also be a great opportunity for us to come together and grow as a group.”

South Dakota State will enter its Summit League schedule with three straight home games against Eastern Washington (December 10), Mount Marty (December 12) and Bellevue (December 14). The game against the Eagles is only the second against the enemy of Big Sky. SDSU beat EWU 74-64 at Cheney in 2018. The Jackrabbits are 3-0 against Bellevue when they last met in 2005, while SDSU are 4-0 against Mount Marty, both teams previously playing Frost Arena in 2021.

“Being able to wrap up our non-league schedule in front of the best fans in the country is a great way for us to get into league play!”

The Summit League schedule begins December 21 for Jackrabbits on the Road. SDSU hosts its first conference game Dec. 29 at Frost Arena against Western Illinois.

The Jackrabbits return in 2022-23 after winning the regular season and Summit League tournament championship titles and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament a season ago. Season tickets are now available for purchase online by visiting
