Apex Legends skins have been changed as Respawn responds to P2W issues

Some Apex Legends skins are being updated by Respawn in an effort to address community concerns regarding “pay to win cosmetics”. EA’s Apex Legends is one of the best battle royale games out there and has been hugely successful thanks to its wide range of cosmetic microtransactions. However, a small number of weapon skins drew criticism from players who felt that ADS (face down) was superior to using other skins on Apex Legends best guns.

In a post on its website, developer Respawn says, “Competitive integrity is and always will be a central pillar for Apex Legends. As part of this, our default iron sights are designed to trick players into looting for better optics. He addresses iron sights directly, saying, “We also believe that skins shouldn’t be a factor in the functionality of sights.”

Two specific examples of skins being adjusted are given. The first is the Heat Sink reactive skin for the VK-47 Flatline rifle. Respawn notes that “We heard feedback from some players that the ADS felt superior to any other skin available.” Conversely, the Revelations skin for the Gaiden Event Flatline has been changed to improve visibility – the team explains that “we felt the side fins were creating larger blind spots than expected, so we have reduced to improve visibility when ADS.”

These updates to improve performance consistency across cosmetic offerings will certainly be welcome. Respawn concludes by reinforcing that “We believe that any competitive advantage in Apex Legends should be gained by honing your skills and not due to the perceived benefits of purchasing gun skins.”

The community has responded positively on the news so far, with a much-loved comment saying, “Looks like it’s going to be healthy for the game in the long run.” Many people say they’re happy to now be able to use more skins they’ve been avoiding to look “awkward but cool”, although some players are now worried about the future of some of their favorite cosmetics. Among those called out by community members are those from R99, including the Zero Point skin and season seven reactive skins.

Developer Respawn has previously said that Apex Legends’ new weapons “have to be sexy and strong” to be successful.
