After a three-year hiatus, UMD Volleyball earns a berth in the NCAA Tournament

Friday’s game will mark the 23rd time in program history the Bulldogs have made it to the NCAA Tournament and their first since 2019.

DULUTH, Minnesota — The UMD volleyball team officially entered the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night.

The Bulldogs landed at number three in the Central Region and will face 6th-seeded Washburn in the 1st round of the tournament on Friday.

Friday’s game will mark the 23rd time in program history the Bulldogs have made it to the NCAA Tournament and their first since 2019.

Earlier in the day, head coach Jim Boos commented on the game against the Ichabods.

“Seeing Washburn is exciting, he’s a new opponent, he’s someone we haven’t seen. It’s not an enemy of the conference right away. Learning to prepare for someone new rekindles the fire inside of them. Gets them to focus on learning what they do and how we work to defend it. It’s a lot of young players, a lot of players who weren’t on the pitch last year who have steadily improved throughout the year to the point where they peaked here at the end and won their tournament conference in a very, very good conference beating three ranked teams. It will be a very good first-round test,” Boos said.

And senior captain Madison Gordon says it will take everyone to continue the season.

“We are in this place as a team, in this position because of all the different players on our team. There isn’t just one away player who is a phenomenal player. We have Cianna, Syd, Hope, Grace Daak and Sam Paulsen, all of them are amazing hitters, so it’s not just one power, we have a lot of them on the court. I think one of the big things is keeping our rhythm with defense and passing with my setting. It’s super important to keep that rhythm in all aspects of the court. Just to get that other team working on the other side,” Gordon added.

The game will take place Friday at noon in Wayne, Nebraska.
