While there are many scary horror games to play during the Halloween season, few actually take place on Halloween. Horror game favorites like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Until Dawn, and Fatal Frame certainly serve in the spirit of fear, but not so much in the Halloween realm.
There are games that take place on Halloween, however, and they range from action to puzzle and adventure.
Costume Quest is an adorable adventure RPG in which players take on the role of the Twins, Wren and Reynold. As twins, they can explore and complete quests through hints or treatments. You can also slowly unlock costume pieces to change your appearance and slowly have an adventure party.
The game and its sequel are available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. The game isn’t scary at all, in fact it can be funny at times and really captures the boyish charm of the holidays.
Haunted Halloween 86: The Curse of Possum Hollow
Originally for the NES, but available today on Steam and Nintendo Switch, Haunted Halloween ’86: The Curse of Possum Hollow is a beat’em up platformer. The story is about children, stuff or treats, and wandering around a farm owned by a mad farmer.
The farm becomes a seven-level dungeon of undead monsters. The game is known to be difficult but is quite nostalgic for fans of 8-bit games.
Batman: Knight of Arkham
Batman: Arkham Knight is a beloved title that rests on a throne of rewards. The action-adventure game was released in 2015 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Although the game seems long, the story of the game unfolds in a single night. Night is Halloween.
The Halloween connection also has some neat Easter egg content. For example, if the console’s internal clock says it’s October 31st, there will be a Man-Bat appearance.
Barnyard Blast: the pig of the night
Released in 2008, this Nintendo DS game acts as a parody of games like old horror titles like Castlevania.
The story is about a grandfather, Robert, on a quest to save his piglet who was kidnapped and taken to a spooky ancient castle on Halloween night. The game has six levels, some with fun names like “The Volcano BBQ”, “The Swamp Full of Disgusting Creepy-Crawlies” and “The Castle of Intolerable Pain”.
Night in the woods
Night in the Woods is a story driven single player adventure game. It takes place over more than a day, but takes place during the fall and includes Halloween (although in the game it is known as Harfest).
During the city’s Harfest festival, the protagonist witnesses the kidnapping of a teenager. She also dresses in a cute little outfit and does a hilarious little Harfest performance.
Released in 1995, Jack Bros. was an action game for an old, time-forgotten console, the Virtual Boy. The story involves three brothers Jack, Jack Lantern, Jack Frost, and Jack Skelton who visit the human world on Halloween. The story of the game is simply for the brothers to return to the fairy world before the portal closes.
The game was actually the first in the Megami Tensei franchise to release in North America.
Another game from the 90s, Midnight Mutants was intended for the Atari 7800. The story takes place on Halloween night and the protagonists’ grandfather was imprisoned in a pumpkin by the antagonist, Dr. Evil. Dr. Evil wants revenge, because the ancestor of the protagonists burned them for being a witch on a Halloween night hundreds of years ago.
The player travels through levels in haunted forests, cemeteries, shipwrecks, mansions, etc. They are able to pick up weapons and fight monsters.
Alien Incident is a point-and-click adventure game released in 1996. On Halloween, the protagonist visits his uncle’s mansion. His uncle’s latest invention creates a wormhole that brings an alien spaceship to Earth. The uncle is then kidnapped by aliens and must be saved.
The game is not scary and remains fairly light throughout the story. Like most point-and-click games, it contains a lot of puzzles.
For the PS2, Gamecube, and Game Boy Advance, Castleween is about children Alicia and Greg trying to save their friends on Halloween night after being turned to stone by a monster. The game can be single player or multiplayer, and has gotten mixed or negative reviews from critics.
The game was produced by the French developers, Kalisto Entertainment and Wanadoo Edition. Released in 2003 and not having received much positive attention, Castleween is a game many have forgotten.
Not to be confused with Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School, this NES game was released in 1992. The story tells the story of a high school student, Spike, who takes a skull he found in a cemetery to show it off. to an anatomy teacher at school on Halloween. .
However, this freed the high school undead. The chief cheerleader is kidnapped, and the teachers and students have turned into demons. In terms of genre, the game is a survival horror action game.
